GMAT Preparation made easy | Preparation and Registration Tips on Test Day

The Graduate Management Admission Test is a standardized test organized by GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council) for candidates aspiring to take up the MBA program abroad. Business Schools abroad rely on the GMAT score to make their admission decisions. GMAT preparation also enables a candidate to demonstrate his commitment to a career in business.

The GMAT Exam measures the skills a candidate possesses for admission into a business school. It is a valid exam that rightly measures the academic performance of a candidate. It predicts program performance of the candidate. This is gaining prominent importance because the employers’ demand for graduate business students continues to show an upward trend, as more companies plan to hire graduates from MBA and master level programs in management, accounting and finance.

There are a lot of factors that affect selection into graduate business schools. Some of the notable ones are the proven ability to perform, strong oral communication skills, strong technical and quantitative skills, increased job responsibility, strong writing skills and relevant industry experience. Employers expect B- school graduates to possess an average experience of 2-4 years while applying.

How do I register for GMAT?

GMAT preparation can be taken all through the year and it is important to plan well before taking up the exam. You can register 6 months prior to the test date. Registering options can be done via mail or by phone, but it is important to check deadlines for registering under any of these options. Make sure that your name, date of birth, country of citizenship and gender are exactly as they appear on the identification document that will be presented at the test center.

The test fee for GMAT is $275 which is approx. Rs.21,000 and the payment for the test can be made through any one of the following payment options –

a) Credit Card

b) Debit Card [ VISA/ MASTER/AMEX/JCB].

Some banks do not allow the use of Debit cards for transactions through the internet and in such cases candidates need to contact the bank for further assistance.

You can reschedule or cancel your examination via phone, but you will be charged $10 as service fee. Changes within 24 hours prior to the test date cannot be made. If you reschedule or cancel 7 days within the actual test date, you pay a reduced fee for rescheduling or get a partial refund for cancellations. If you reschedule of cancel 7 days or fewer than the test date, you will have to pay the full registration fee for rescheduling and will not get a refund for cancellation.

How to prepare for GMAT?

All test takers are evaluated on the same number of questions and answer the same type of questions. The duration of the test would also not differ from candidate to candidate and the testing conditions remain the same for all.

As the candidates progress through the sections of the test, the computer evaluates the responses and updates the score and selects the next question by adapting to the skill of the candidate. Hence GMAT is a Computer Adaptive Test. Candidates cannot skip or leave questions unanswered.

On the test day
  • Present the right identification document
  • Read the GMAT examination testing guidelines
  • Verify the identity (palm vein scan / digital signature / sit for a photograph)
  • Take a deep breath and begin the exam
  • During the break, you are permitted to have only water, food and other comfort items at the discretion of the center
  • Return on time after the break, so as not to lose time on the next section
  • Use of mobile phones or study material is not allowed
  • Sitting idly at the workstation is not permitted in case you return early from your break
  • After the exam you cannot record, copy or disclose any exam question or answer in any form

When you complete your exam, you will be shown your unofficial GMAT exam score. You will get 2 mins to decide if you want to accept or cancel the score. If you don’t make any choice, the exam will automatically be cancelled. If your scores are cancelled, you will not receive a hard copy of the score or be given a copy of your unofficial scores.
